The three-week monopoly trial of video game developer Epic Games vs. Apple has just ended. We have sorted out the nine insider stories exposed in this trial.
1.Apple closed iMessage to sell more iPhones
We have known for a long time that Apple will not provide iMessage outside of iOS devices, but Epic lawsuit against Apple's monopoly showed that Apple determined not to extend iMessage to other operating systems, and why the company didn't do so.
Internal e-mails show that Eddy Cue, Apple's Software Director, pushed to expand iMessage as an instant messaging platform just like WhatsApp as early as 2013. This problem reappeared in an e-mail sent to Phil Schiller, the Apple's Senior Vice President of Marketing in 2016. But the idea was rejected twice for the same reason: opening up iMessage only means that consumers will have one less reason to buy an iPhone.
2.Sony regards the transaction of the game--Fortnite cross-play as a commercial burden
Sony spent a long time making different versions of the Fortnite games available for cross playing. But several new letters from Epic Games showed that the deal was even more troublesome than the public knows. Obviously, Sony regards cross-play game as a commercial burden of its business. However, it is only after Epic Games agrees to sign a complex cross-platform revenue sharing agreement that Sony will be willing to adopt the cross-game mode.
It's a unique agreement. But since we learned that Play Station is the biggest source of revenue for Fortnite, Epic Games seems willing to make concessions for this platform. (Source: Tencent News)
